Chapter Eighteen

The dragons all move together as one, their eyes locked on us. Some in front open their mouths and fire their elements. Fire and balls of electricity fly past my head as the dragons soar towards us.

“Everyone, move out of the city!” Isaac cries out, barely heard among the roars of the dragons.

Flame and electricity explode against the concrete, sending sparks flying in all directions. One person gets hit squarely in the chest, crashing to the floor like a ton of bricks. She writhes around for a few seconds before going sickeningly still.

Aqueous grabs my arm and attempts to haul me onto his back, but I’m snapped back into reality.

“Get everyone on the dragons!” I shout to Isaac. “We can out fly them; the armour makes them slow!”

He looks around with scared eyes. “There aren’t enough.”

Just as he says this, Cyan dives down and plucks one boy by his shoulders, hauling him into the air at an impressive speed.

“What about with the Wyverns?” I ask again.

“Possibly. But they’re too close.”

The Ouroboros wriggles free of Isaac’s backpack, sticking its orange face out towards the world. Its small eyes land on the dragons coming towards us, but it doesn’t look fazed. Instead it slowly pulls its tail out of its mouth. By this point the dragons are on the pavement, only feet away from us.

Before I can warn anyone, a high-pitched scream escapes the little dragon’s throat, and the armoured dragons stop, flattening their ears to their heads in pain. Isaac looks shocked, but I quickly spring into action.

“Get everyone out!” I shout to the remaining dragons and Wyverns. “It won’t last long!”

They all spring into action and start picking people up left and right. Aqueous springs into the air just as Isaac hops on Ariadne’s back. Bluey flies past us, following Cyan and Green. The two Wyverns are each holding someone by their shoulders, but their powerful legs keep them stable.

The Ouroboros clamps its mouth shut and strokes Isaac behind his ear. I’m sure it’s giving him the same ‘kiss’ as I have.

When there’s no-one left on the ground, Aqueous follows the rest of the group towards the forest. The dragons start to recover, shaking their heads and roaring their fury. Luckily, we have a head start as the dragons start leaping into the air to give chase.

A bright purple dragon with neon green wings drops back, one of the Aislados clutching its neck. With a flap of her wings, the dragon sends a powerful gust of wind towards our enemies, blowing most of them out of the sky. Many drop to the ground, unable to find a way around the wind current the dragon has created. I guess the ones left are wind elementals, as they’re the only ones unaffected. Although the dragon has knocked a good twenty of them out of the sky, six dragons remain.

“Head towards the forest! Try to lose them!” Isaac shouts as he and Ariadne break off to join the others.

Drea and Damayanti drop back to my companion, their gazes hardened.
